Coach Matt began his fitness journey almost 20 years ago.  At that time, Matt was overweight, in poor health and in poor mental health.  One night, while watching a Mixed Martial Arts fight on Spike TV, Matt decided to give kickboxing a try in an effort to change his lifestyle.  Soon after, he found a local gym that also offered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in its curriculum.  He  immediately found out that kickboxing wasn’t his thing, but Jiu Jitsu was. Something about having a smaller human being win the match through technique, leverage, and timing really resonated with him.

Just over a decade ago, Matt found CrossFit.  The Jiu Jitsu academy he was studying at also offered strength and conditioning classes.  The owner suggested that he give fitness a try in order to become better at Jiu Jitsu.  Within 6 months of beginning CrossFit, Matt went and obtained his Level 1 Certification at CrossFit Southie in Boston, MA. Coming back to the Academy, he learned that it had been re-branded as CrossFit Hartford / Underdog MMA and Jiu Jitsu.  

Over the years, Matt has gone to gyms all around the globe through CrossFit and Jiu Jitsu.  From Milan to Prague to Las Vegas, Matt was able to see various coaching styles and observe athletes move. With several certifications and collegiate level classes Matt has developed into a  high quality coach that can observe and cue at the same time, giving him the ability to help guide everyday people through their fitness transformations.
